FAQ

DNS lookup questions

What do the record types mean?

A and AAAA point a name at an IPv4 or IPv6 address. CNAME makes a name an alias of another name. MX lists the mail servers. NS names the domain’s nameservers. TXT holds text such as SPF rules and site verification codes. CAA says which certificate authorities may issue certificates, and SOA holds the zone’s admin details.

I changed a record, so why do I still see the old value?

Resolvers cache answers for the record’s TTL (time to live), shown in seconds. After a change, some places keep the old value until the TTL runs out. Lower the TTL a day before planned changes.

Why do example.com and www.example.com show different records?

They’re separate names with separate records. Often www is a CNAME to a hosting platform while the bare domain has A records. Enter www.example.com to look up the www name.

Which DNS records matter for SEO?

Only indirectly: your A, AAAA or CNAME records must point at a working server, and both the bare domain and www should reach the site (one redirecting to the other). TXT records are also how Google Search Console can verify you own a domain.
