Redirect checker
Enter an address to see every redirect it goes through, with the status code of each hop, and whether the setup is right for visitors and Google.
Status codes
What the redirect codes mean
301 Moved permanently
The page moved for good. Google treats it as a strong signal to show the new address in search results. Use it for most moves.
308 Permanent redirect
Like 301, but browsers must keep the request method (a form POST stays a POST). Google treats it the same as 301.
302 Found (temporary)
A temporary move. Google treats it as a weak signal, so the old address may stay in search results. Use it only for short-term moves.
307 Temporary redirect
Like 302, but the request method is kept. Also temporary in Google’s eyes.
404 / 410 Not found / Gone
A redirect that ends here sends visitors and Google to an error. Redirect to a page that exists, or remove links to the old address.
FAQ
Redirect checker questions
How many redirects is too many?
One is ideal. Every extra hop adds a round trip for visitors and work for crawlers; Googlebot follows at most 10 hops before reporting a redirect error. If an address goes through several redirects, point the first one straight at the final page.
Should I use a 301 or a 302 redirect?
Use 301 (or 308) when a page has moved for good, such as after changing a URL or moving to https. Use 302 (or 307) only when the move is temporary and the original address will come back.
Does this checker see JavaScript or meta refresh redirects?
No. It follows HTTP redirects, the ones servers send with a 3xx status code and a Location header. Redirects made by JavaScript or a meta refresh tag only happen in a browser, and Google treats them as weaker signals anyway.
Which user agent does the checker use?
It visits as HintmeshBot. A few sites redirect differently depending on the visitor (by country, device or bot); if you see something unexpected, check the same address in your browser too.
