What’s the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
Both publish domain registration records. RDAP is the newer, structured version, and since January 2025 it’s the official source for generic domains like .com, .net and .org. This lookup uses RDAP.
Why can’t I see who owns the domain?
Registries and registrars hide personal contact details for privacy (and to follow laws like GDPR), so most records only show the registrar. To contact an owner, use the registrar’s contact form or the details on the website itself.
What do status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?
They’re locks set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited, for example, stops the domain being moved to another registrar without the owner unlocking it first. It’s a normal safety setting.
What happens when a domain expires?
Usually the registrar keeps it for a grace period in which the owner can still renew, then a redemption period that costs more to recover. After that the registry deletes it and anyone can register it.
