FAQ
UTM builder questions
Which UTM parameters do I need?
Use utm_source (where the link is, like newsletter or facebook), utm_medium (the type of channel, like email or cpc) and utm_campaign (the campaign name) on every tagged link. utm_term, utm_content and utm_id are optional extras.
Are UTM values case-sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats Email and email as two different values, splitting your reports. Pick a style, such as all lowercase with hyphens, and stick to it.
Should I put UTM tags on links within my own site?
No. A UTM tag on an internal link starts a new session with the new source, so the visit loses its real origin. Use them only on links that bring people to your site from elsewhere.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Not when they’re used on external campaign links. If tagged URLs end up linked publicly, a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL keeps search engines from treating them as separate pages.
