FAQ

Sitemap checker questions

Where should my sitemap be?

Anywhere on your site, as long as search engines can find it. The usual place is /sitemap.xml. List it in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

How big can a sitemap be?

One sitemap file can list up to 50,000 URLs and be up to 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger sites split their URLs over several files and list those files in a sitemap index.

Does a sitemap guarantee my pages get indexed?

No. A sitemap helps search engines discover pages and notice updates, but Google still decides which pages to index based on quality and other signals. List only pages you want in search results: canonical, indexable pages that return status 200.

Does Google use lastmod?

Yes, if it’s consistently accurate. Google ignores priority and changefreq, but uses lastmod to decide when to recrawl a page. Update it only when the page content really changes.

The free site audit crawls every page and lists what stops them ranking: broken links, redirect chains, missing tags, blocked pages, with fixes.
