FAQ
Title & meta description checker questions
How long should a title tag be?
Google cuts titles by pixel width, not a character count: on desktop that’s usually about 50 to 60 characters. Put the most important words first so the title still makes sense if it’s cut.
How long should a meta description be?
Google shows up to roughly 150 to 160 characters on desktop and less on mobile, cut by width. There’s no penalty for longer descriptions; the extra text just isn’t shown. Write a clear summary of the page in the first 120 characters or so.
Why does Google show a different description from mine?
Google often writes its own snippet from the page text when it thinks that matches the search better, and sometimes rewrites titles too. A description that accurately summarises the page is used more often.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Not directly. Google says the meta description isn’t a ranking factor, but a clear description can make more people click your result.
